Java is a computer programming language that is designed for use in the multiple-computer environment of the Internet. It can be used to make single-machine applications or be distributed among many computers on a network. In addition, Java can be used to create applets for use within a Web page, which allow users to interact directly with the page. Because Java requires no operating system-specific extensions, Java applets run on most operating systems.

Java is not the same as JavaScript, a Netscape creation that is easier to learn than Java, but lacks some of the speed and portability of Java.
